Culiacan

Meaning:
Culiacán is a Nahuatl word composed by Col-hua-can or Cul-hua-can, which means "place of the Coltzin God's worshipers"

However, there are discrepancies among the historians in reference with its significance, giving it as well the name of "place of snakes" or "crooked hill" or "where travelers turn their way."

Cualiacán is the capital city of the state of Sinaloa--a city with excellent services. It was founded in the confluence of the Humaya and Tamazula rivers, which converge in the middle of the city, forming the Culiacán River. The city is not a seaport, but it seems so because of its warm weather and the coastal temperament of its inhabitants. Culiacán offers diverse attractions for entertainment, leisure and commercial activities. We recommend starting the tour with a visit to the beautiful cathedral built at the end of the nineteenth century and located at one side of the Alvaro Obregón plaza. Other points of interest are the antique Hospicio del Estado (State's Orphanage), currently the municipal palace headquarters; the Constitution Civic Center offering multiple attractions like the Regional Museum of Sinaloa, which exhibits Nahuatl ceramic pieces of the Culiacán valley, a zoo and an open theater; the Paseo Niños Héroes or Malecón, which defines the Three River Project, embellishing the area with spacious green areas, bridges and new services; the Centenario building of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa; La Lomita, a scenic place where a good part of the city can be admired; the Genaro Estrada Cultural Center dedicated to promote our traditions; the Culiacán 87 Park, with an artificial lake, sports fields and carnival rides. Additionally, visitors will find the new Sinaloa Art Museum, housed in a building constructed in the eighteenth century; the Ciudad Universitaria; the Botanical Garden; the Sinaloa Science Center conformed by a planetarium, an auditorium, a science and technology library, a databank and an exhibit of the second largest meteorite in the world. The fertile Culiacán valley also has imposing agricultural fields and a very important horticultural packaging industry.

Attractions and Festivities

The Imala spa is located 30 km from Culiacán. This cozy little town is famous for its medicinal sulfurous springs. The area is surrounded by lush vegetation and equipped with the required installations for a splendid picnic. The De La Cruz church in Imala is an antique construction that goes back to the eighteenth century and is quite appreciated for its unaffected style. From November to February, the Chiricahueto lagoons become an aquatic-birds paradise. 36 km from Culiacán you will find the Sanalona dam, a beautiful region where the green vegetation contrasts strikingly with the rough vigilant mountains. The dam is a coveted meeting place for lovers of sport fishing because it is rich in sea bass, catfish and mojarra. It is also a very nice place for picnics. Other places nearby where hunting, fishing and aqua sports are practiced: the Isles of Redo, San Juan, Quevedo, and Baradito; the islets of Manglar de Iguanas, Tijeras, and Los Patos; the beaches of Medano Blanco, Barras de la Tonina, Copas and Ponce; the thermal waters of Imala; the Chiricahueto and Canachi lagoons; and the Cascabeles and Yameto dikes.

The traditional festivity of San Miguel Arcángel in Culiacán coincides with the foundation of the city, on September 29th, and the Virgen de la Candelaria revelry is celebrated on February 2nd. The famous Cattle, Industrial and Commercial Exposition is performed during the month of October. The Cultural Festival takes place in November.

TAMBORA, the rhythm that keeps Sinaloa rocking

Music is an art that combines the sounds according to the principles of melody, harmony and rhythm. It is a feeling manifestation and is linked with the social groups, its traditions and customs. It is the expression of whatever the townspeople carry in their hearts, the purest exposition of their personal experience.
